Bug Collectors Wanted

An appeal from Operation Chough at Paradise Park

Following on from the successful rearing of chough chicks last year, Paradise Park is urgently looking for volunteers to find bugs for this year’s breeding choughs.

The success in the last few years is mainly due to a new method of feeding the young birds “wild caught” food – as much and as often as possible. This wild food is very close to the food choughs would find for themselves on the coast, and has proved to be a great benefit to the young chicks.

We now have choughs with young chicks, and urgently need wild food. Listed below is a table of food that young choughs need to help them survive.

Wanted Not Wanted
Ants Nests & Ants Eggs Slugs
Woodlice Snails
Earwigs Worms
Beetles Caterpillars
Centipedes Butterflies
Millipedes Moths
Small Spiders Bees
(Any other “creepy crawlies”) Wasps

If you would like to collect any of the bugs mentioned in the “Wanted” column, we would be glad to take them from you.

Free Operation Chough Book and Badge

Simply bring your bugs to the main entrance at Paradise Park, and staff will swap your creatures for a free “Operation Chough” badge. The shop is open daily from 10 am.

CCTV (Chough Chick TV) can be seen in the Otter Pool Café at the Park. Entry to the café is free and visitors can watch the chicks’ progress – and perhaps have a cream tea at the same time!

Images from the nest-cam will also be added to the Operation Chough website at www.paradisepark.org.uk/choughs/webcam/index.htm

Thanks for your help.
